You've most likely heard about oil pulling, but you're also most likely to not really understand what it actually is!
Oil pulling (swishing up to a tablespoon of oil around your mouth for up to 20 minutes daily) is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy that helps cleanse the body by detoxifying and cleaning teeth and gums. The concept takes some getting used to, but it is a wonderful all-round treatment for oral health. It makes your breath fresher and your teeth whiter. Celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow swear by it. What's not to like?
You can do this with other oils, but coconut oil has the added benefit of lauric acid, which is well-known for its anti-microbial agents, and is commonly recognised as being the most effective.
We found putting a tablespoon of oil in our mouth and keeping it there for 20 minutes a bit daunting, so we have created the following method which makes it a bit more manageable!
All you need to do is melt enough coconut oil to fill the empty cube molds of an ice tray - add a few drops of essential oil to give a more mouthwash-like taste, and pour into the molds. Refrigerate until solidified, cut each cube in half, and store in a small container in the fridge. This is the perfect amount for your daily oil pull, and you'll have enough to keep you going for the next week or two! When you get more used to the concept, you can use a whole cube rather than half.
To do your oil pull, all you need to do is swish around the oil in your mouth for close as you can get to 20 minutes. You may find you can only manage 5 minutes at first but it gets easier! Spit it out into the bin, not the sink, as the oil can clog the pipes.
Oil pulling is best done on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.
